Justice, sort of.

May have been mentioned before but last week the guy who crashed into and killed Adam Gibb and paralysed Paul Holroyd who used to run Takoda campsite was jailed for 7 years. Unfortunately he is only likely to serve 3 of those years before being released, not true justice in my opinion.

Gotta agree with you Andy - no justice at all really for those directly and in-directly affected by this mindless twots actions.

Thanks for the update Andy, I remember it well, bloody horrendous. 7 years for killing someone and completely ruining anothers life doesn't seem like much justice does it? Just think of all the family members' lives this has completely changed forever and it's even more staggering.

Let's hope Paul can get that bungalow sorted and at least try to make as decent a life as he can.

Thanks for posting that Austin. Glad for Paul in that he can at least carry on with some part of his previous life.

Thanks Andy,
I rode past a locked up Takoda a while back & wondered how Paul is doing. Surely he must be due a bit of luck now?

On the news it said the guy was texting all the way down the M6 he had text/ received 44 texts between Tbay to the collision. 3 years is a disgrace. We should plan a mini meet at Takoda.

It's a complete disgrace. I understand that accidents can happen, it could happen to anyone of us at any time and there is a chance you could kill someone (heaven forbid!). But to knowingly text and drive is unforgivable and if you kill someone then the penalty should be MUCH harsher because as far as I'm concerned it's not an accident.

Have to agree with that. Just recently I've had two near misses when riding a rather large yellow and red motorcycle that "glows" I shudder to think what could have happened.
A big problem, I feel, is a lack of policing on the roads. Hardly ever see a traffic car on motorways.

Mikey has hit the nail on the head lack of policing , bloody farmers around here bloody great tractors flat out with huge inmplements attached on single track lanes and phone to the ear de rigeur , saw a video last night from 1979 greater manchester had 170 motorway/roads policing officers , I bet they dont have 17 now

........ We should plan a mini meet at Takoda.

This is not justice, it's a disgrace. I am on the bike 6 days a week and I have stopped counting the number of people blatantly using all sorts of mobile devises while driving :(

I love Mike's idea of a meet up at Takoda.....maybe our way to show support....? I spent a weekend there and to be honest, you would hard pushed to find a more biker friendly campsite......what about a National up there if the site is up and running..? or a summer meet...? The location is fab, the pub is near, the food is good.......

Fekin disgrace, that's what it is.
I used to use my phone all the time whilst driving, not so much now. I have a hands free. Up here, west coast fine. But even with a hands free, I have to say that my concentration is not 100%.
My calls are predominately business and I have to confess, your mind wanders into trying to resolve a situation whilst driving ? not good.
On a motorway with no hands free -- I couldn't/wouldn't do it.

I hope Paul makes the best of what's left of his life.
He was always chirpa every time I met him, so I'm thinking his zest for life will pull him through, here's hoping.

Agree with previous -- let's go to Takoda

The sad fact is most people don't give a shit, they aren't bothered about you or your family, until they end up in court then they fain sympathy and sorrow. This coupled with the fact that they think it'll never happen to them means that unfortunately, no matter the penalty, they will still continue to do it.

At least if they were banned then no matter how much they don't care and will still do it, they can't if they're banned and thus not driving. Personally I'd introduce a 1 year ban for first offenders caught using a mobile and 5 year ban for a second offence, a third offence would incur a 10 year ban and your car seized and a retest. 4th offence means a lifetime ban.

Very true! I really don't understand why people think having a phone (or text) conversation is some overwhelmingly important that it can't wait until they've stopped driving. I'm not convinced that "hands-free" is a lot safer, but given that the law currently says it's permitted, and most (all?) modern cars have bluetooth stuff built-in I can see no reason to use a hand-held phone while driving. Taxi drivers seem to be prolific offenders. (And don't get me started on white-van drivers reading maps, invoices etc plonked on the steering wheel whilst bowling along the street).

The thing that has me worried is the trend by Tesla et al to put big arse ipad-style touch screens in cars as a way to control everything. Ironically, touch screens can't be operated by touch, so turning the heater or the volume up or whatever now requires you to look at your hand instead of the road.
