More interference from EU bureaucretins

Telematics. Nothing that new. We have the system fitted in the new FH/FM4's. Allows you to track the vehicle, download position and previous route, read error codes, even send software and commands to the vehicle. Useful when some Muppet has locked himself out....

Am I surprised to see this on cars? Nope not really.

You think this is just limited to the EU?

Just another example of the media twisting things to suit their own political agenda. This type of feature has been fitted to cars with telematics (integrated sat nav/phone/information systems) for years. All it does is send your GPS co-ordinates to an emergency phone number if the air bags deploy, you are not tracked until you crash. A good thing unless you enjoy hanging upside down in a flooded ditch for hours. In the era of Automatic Number plate Recognition Cameras and bog standard CCTV chances are big brother already knows where you are.
MCN ran a similar article about the implementation of on board diagnostics (OBD) on bikes preventing owners from doing their own 'upgrades'. Well it hasn't stopped car owners from tuning their vehicles, just made it a more scientific process involving a laptop rather than a spanner.

Must be true if it's in the mail, nothing new in tracking you, your mobile phone does it for you, your car with in bulit sat-nav does it for you, modern cars have an emergency call to emergency services, there's a phone ap that does it and calls 999 if it senses something wrong with and that cost £15 a bloke on the test day last weekend showed it to me can't remember what it's called. Then you have the tracker box for kids that pass there tst and by having it fitted reduces there insurance by a £1000 or so

So evidently people are not the slightest bit worried about being tracked

We had similar technology when I worked for MAN TRUCK AND BUS , MUNICH could down load truck data and send engineers out literaly as the fault happened 12 years ago. No doubt this is part designed by the Swedish in their zero tolerance plan on road accidents. 2015 this is coming out expect email speed tickets by feb 2015.

It's pretty clear the politicians are stirring up dissent over EU so Cameron can use it as leverage in forthcoming negotiations. "If I don't get my way I won't be able to resist pressures to leave." He returns a hero (or gets boxed in to having to exit the EU).
There was an episode of Yes Prime Minister that blew the lid on how it works. PM blows a rumour out of proportion, gets assurances that the rumours are false, makes brave speeches about how he's going to fight Britain's interests (even though there was no threat), then announces his "victory" the next day.
Keep complaining if it makes you feel better, but personally I can't get enthused.

Must be a generational thing - personally I want less laws controlling my hobby, my life etc etc. As an example, I've just built a kitchen extension and the Building Regs and constant Inspector visits were an effing nightmare. I agree with laws that ensure I ride safely and don't impinge on the safety of others but we live in a world of ever increasing and wholly irrelevant controls imposed on us against our will by the 'Authorities' and personally I am fed up with it. And beware of what not getting 'enthused' can lead to

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me." Pastor Martin Niemöller

We're talking about a slot for a SIM card, not the holocaust.
No, we're not talking about the Holocaust - but what we are talking about is the insidious erosion of our civil liberties, especially if we can't get enthused and just roll over and let it happen. Opposition in the early stages to this creeping barrage of legislation can work; successful lobbying of MEP's, orchestrated by the admittedly discredited MAG, has removed the proposal for a 'super MOT' being introduced in 2015. The A/A2/CBT licence system which has significantly reduced the numbers of new bikers is another prime example of allowing the eurocretins free range without too much opposition. Maybe my quote from Martin Niemöller was inappropriate, but the point I was trying to make is that unless the apathetic majority support the campaigners of this world, we have to accept that as a minority we bikers will just be rolled over and we'll disappear as a species - or worse, we'll all be riding Suzuki Burgman EZ400's!

There's some bullsh1t talked in this quote.

The extended mot should be brought in as the current one is donkeys years out of date and there's very little on a modern bike that gets tested and checked. I'm all for things like ABS, traction control and any other rider systems being safety tested every 12mths. If nothing else it means there's less chance of you buying a defective second hand bike, instead of a bike with dodgy electrics which somebody can't be bothered to sort out so passes it onto someone else faulty.

I know 2 people that own motorcycle training schools and both say they same. That they have never been busier than they are at the moment in summer or winter. There is a huge demand for motorcycle licences and the restrictions are not putting people off in any way shape or form.

As for the Burgman comment

I test rode this 650 Burgman on my local dealers test day last sunday and it was a scream really good ride and more importantly it was fun to ride and bloody quick with instant power. I would have no shame riding one of these as a second, third or 4th bike. They are hugely popular on the continent god knows why they aren't over here.

Before you comment the test ride the other 2 i test rode are these

Did you realise that in a debate you can actually disagree with someone's point of view without being abusive? Try it

Just said what i saw after reading some stupid generalisations

As I understand it, we are one of the few countries in the EU that MOT's bikes. Ireland doesn't have it and at the moment, as far as I'm aware, it's not an EU requirement.

The US and Canada don't have MOT's and they seem to manage okay.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and shouldn't be shouted down for having a different point of view. If you don't agree then you will just have to agree to disagree! Doesn't matter how strict an MOT is, it's only valid for the day of the test anyway!

After the last few posts which were well out of order (and factually just plain wrong!) it is nice to have some support backed by substantive factual information and not just abusive mudslinging. So, thanks Loggy!

The reality is that the recent report by the House of Commons Transport Select Committee has stated unequivocally that the number of tests for the A and A2 motorcycle licence has halved since EU harmonisation of driving licence regulations and this will have a 'disastrous effect on the future of the motorcycle industry in the UK'.

You are entitled to express your opinions on the matter but may I suggest you would garner more respect if you checked on the facts first, and also refrained from resorting to abuse?
