Took her out to warm it up for an oil change and slippety, slip goes the clutch....

At least I know everything comes apart easily

Just got to work up the courage to pull the gearbox now [emoji37]

Flippin' 'eck, Ian. You'll know your bike more intimately than most GS owners by the time you've finished. ;)

Has this come on all of a sudden?

Yep, it rides ok but when you give it a fistful it slips
I'm doing it now rather than be caught out miles from home

Gearbox off and new bits ordered so I'm now £350 poorer (upgrading the hydraulic clutch lines at the same time)

Is this a worn out clutch or oil contamination?

What mileage have you done since you put Big Bird back together?

It's a worn clutch, it was bone dry when I got it out

I've done about 5000 since it went back together and a total of 58,000 on this clutch

Ouch, that's a bit early.

That's what I thought and the friction plate is still within spec but it definitely slipping, stunk bloody awful when I got home

Are the spring(s) OK? If it's slipping but the plate's not badly worn I'd suspect weak springs. No doubt you'll be replacing both driven plate and spring(s) .... And checking flywheel and pressure plate for wear/damage. Is the gearbox primary shaft that the clutch driven plate slides on in good nick? .. No steps/notches to make the plate not slide freely ?

Splines are all good

The whole clutch is getting replaced so no worry about what's actually worn

Must have been the previous owner being heavy with the clutch then? ;)

New clutch in, new clutch lines fitted and back on the road

Feels much lighter and the bite point is better

Now just to finish the service I started a week ago [emoji3]

Great work Ian, big job to undertake. The bike will be better than new with the upgrades you have done ...

The clutch isn't that big a job? Just time consuming
