I got a couple of 2.4w ones on the shed window, they will dry a battery on my old RD out over winter , they produce power on a dull day just in the window , and will produce 5v with the 500w halogen light switched on in the garden , yes deffo good , but watch the acid level of the battery , connect it one week a month over winter , but that is a lower wattage one so may not be quite so bad

I want one to mount to my topbox lid or wind screen area

Not for charging the battery from flat but merely to keep it healthy

Im planning on going off grid for a while on an adventure and thought it might be a cheap/worthy mod

I take from you saying they dry the battery out that they cant be perminantly attached?

I have one of the 1.5watt ones that keeps a jump start powerpack topped up. It seems to do the job ok. If you fit one to the bike would it only cut in when the engine was not running? The diode that they have fitted should protect the solar charger from the alternator output when the engine is running although the solar charger may feed a charge if the battery voltage was really low. 1.5 watt solar to 200/300 watt alternator.
Cant see any disadvantages from using one in the way you propose and if you do get caught out it may just make the difference.
