A little bit of Lanark County (no, not that one) back road riding.

Why do I keep thinking they'll be a bear round the next corner??

Stay safe and continue these insights we are getting of Canada :)

Because it's not unlikely at all. Bears tend to use human trails / roads etc. Easier than thrashing through the undergrowth. Great stinking piles of black, seed-full poo are a giveaway.
In our area there are about 25 bears per 100 squ. km. (about 85,000 to 105,000 total in Ontario) - up to 60 per squ. km. in Algonquin Park. Only 7 people killed since 1916, so they're not much of a hazard.

Thanks Alba. Much appreciated. And the same to you (and all Bigtrailie denizens). Stay well.

I think it was Bill Bryson who wrote about recommendations for bear country.

Hikers are advised park wear bells on their clothes so they make noise when walking. The bears hear them coming from a distance and so are not startled. A startled bear might charge. Hikers should also carry pepper spray just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.

Hiker should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poo. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper spray.

When we were in the Yukon the guide gave us the safety talk and then told us the best way to ensure your safety when being chased by a bear is to make sure you can run faster then at least one other person in your party.

It's amazing how people from overseas (UK and Oz especially) worry about bears (although admittedly I don't live in grizzly country). They just aren't something one bothers about much.
We all know that humans are the most dangerous animals on the planet. That's why I stay away from them as much as possible.
