Central Heating

Has anyone got experience of the Hive app for controlling heating? What do you think?

I am getting a significant upgrade to our ancient heating system and they have offered hive for just £50 extra (normally £250). Even at £50 I am not certain it's worth it.

Yup, it's a baxi boiler and it's over 32years old. No parts available anymore. It broke at the weekend but only a sensor needed which they (surprisingly) bodged a non standard part in. A couple of years ago it needed a seal and it took them weeks to find one. It won't be long until it goes permenantly and then no heat or water for a couple of weeks until they fit it. I get a safety notice every time it's serviced too (related to the flue).

I am going for a combi boiler, removing the hot water tank for some extra space, thermostatic valves on radiators, relocate the room 'stat, and the Hive thingy.

Oh and I am getting free loft insulation. :)

Well, he does ride a BMW.

Oh, hang on. That engine can trace its lineage back to the 1920's........ :D

So no-one got the Hive then?

The central heating has been one of those things that I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money on. The told boiler just kept plugging away and I couldn't square the claimed savings of the upgrade to my fuel consumption. Neither could the engineer mind you.

There's central heating in the UK? Well I never! Whatever happened to the coal fire in the grate and the pudding singing in the copper (peter)?

If you have solar panels you do. Some panels heat water that you store in a tank.

They just installed one here last month. :(

Fekkin useless boiler thing, water pressure seems worse than what I remember coming out of that typically British rubbish electric in-shower hotel heater...

I really need to move...

Funny, I keep mentioning about getting rid of the old boiler for a newer, more efficient model.

Trouble is she just won't go!
(well, someone had to say it :) )

I can't really comment on the hive all, never used it or installed. It's a simple all on the smart phone and a remote thermostat but I don't know if it's WiFi or 4G connection. Never met a customer with it yet!
As for Combi boilers, Worcester gas boilers are pretty indestructible but, condensing boilers have a10 yr lifespan! That's just how it is!
DHW cylinders? Yes I would promote them above a Combi boiler. Combi boilers have more to go wrong and invariably will!
DHW cylinder connected to solar thermal panels (not PV) can give you up to 80% of your DHW. You can also connect a bivailant system to this, meaning two forms of heat, a log burner with a back boiler for example or an oil back up boiler or ASHP.
A bit of planning involved, type of heating, how many indirect connections to DHW cylinder, solar thermal viable? Bivalent?
Or just rip out the old Baxi Bermuda and stick in a Combi wall mounted! Space? Yes! Cost? Less!
Your choice sir, I'll not start on biomass, just not worth the effort!

Don't say a boilers life is 10yrs...
I have a couple approaching that age!

I'm sure which boiler could be the new 'which oil' thread :)

Good old Baxi/Main for me (I wouldn't touch Vaillant with yours) :)

Worcester for gas, Grant for oil and Mitsubishi for ASHP!

I installed two new Worcester's a week ago, replacing Baxi wall hungs that were 14yrs old and well past it!
