Every forum neets an onging tyres thread....

Just noticed this forum is missing the never ending what tyres are best thread. Not a technical discussion based empirical evidence, no no, just our misguided opinions base on the three sets of tyres we've only had experience with :rolleyes2:

The reason I mention this I manged to get stuck on a muddy trail today on a set of Michelin Anakee 3's. Nothing to outrageous there, except I was on an almost flat bit of track!!! The rear wheel would just spin whilst no movement of the bike. Needless to say after 100 metres of trail I managed to get the bike facing the other way, headed back and just stuck to tarmac.

To be fair it was VERY muddy and it' really a road tyre, however I'm sure my old Anakee 2's were better.

However on tarmac, wet or dry they have been brilliant.

What I'm looking for is the road grip of the Anakee 3, the off road grip of a full on MX tyre, at least 10K miles and all for 40 quid!

.....actually what I really do is swap tyres. I hadn't set out with the intention of a trail ride today I just passed a Byway sign and couldn't resist.

Oh goodness a tyre thread. Against my better judgement, I'll just quickly get my 3 sets of tyres in then before it descends into madness. :D

Well, not quite all that... But have a go at K60 Scouts.

They're not quite as good on wet roads as the old Anakees, but I find them good enough. Certainly better than TKC80s or the regular K60. Also not a full on MX tyre obviously, and not as good offroad as the TKC, especially the 21" front Scout is a bit thin, but they'll manage more than your Anakee3s. :)

The "Tyres" section is under "Technical Archives" and is called "Wheels and Tyres".

I'd move this thread if I could work out how.

might be better under technical discussion as the archives are read only

Hi everyone, I have used two sets of PR3's now and IMHO I think they are fantastic, this Saturday I'm having a set of PR4's fitted :thumbsupanim: at wheelhouse tyres Coalville, then up to custom cruisers with a friend on a very loud 1300 midnightstar, to scrub them dam tyres in
Happy days
Cheers

For my big GS I've whittled it down to only two (well three as you will see)

On the road and dry off-roading there is little to beat the (original) Tourances. Enough grip to get the pegs (and the side stand) down on the road and reasonable grip in the dry off road. Rubbish on mud though. The EXP were reportedly even grippier but I never had any problems with the original ones and the EXPs that were put on my bike when I got it wore out in no time,

Off road TXC80. Great tyre and again not too bad on road but not a patch on the Tourance. While OK in the wet and predictable when they start top go I did find them terrifying when the bike was fully loaded up on the autobahn slip roads in the wet. 30mph and they were all over the place. Scary as feck.

The third option. Mitas E10. For me every bit as good (and look identical) to the TKC80 and at the time a little cheaper although I think the price difference has gone now.

For the record I didn't get on well with the K60 Scout. A half way house with the on road manners of the TKC and the offroad manners of the Tourance (well a little better but not much)

Oops, sorry, I never meant this as a serious thread, more a tongue in cheek posting as it seems to be an obsession of biking threads, and yep, I must confess to reading through all of them too.  :D

Yeah, I had the original Anakees pegged in this role. Except now the bastards stopped making them and came up with this Anakee 3 glorified road tyre silliness. They'll probably be great, but I dunno, the poserboy in me thinks they just look wrong.

Ditto. Funny thing is, they were fine on the dommie, had them for years as the standard do-anything tyre. Including scraping pegs, yes. ;) But on the GS they're scary. Fine up to 50 mph unloaded, but on the motorway it was like doing 70 mph on loose sand, even on dry roads, even in a straight line. That was a bit much for me. Same size front & back, just 50 kg more weight on it. And a bit more power. Odd...

I struggle anyway to understand how one can give advice about tyres as everyone rides different.
Ok maybe on how good/bad they are in mud/sand/cowshit but to the overall riding???
I get on real well with the (european) Heidis and even offroad they are plenty good enough for my ability's, no problem in the wet(just be aware of the white lines) and i get mega miles out of them even 2up and plenty motorway work?
My advice would be, buy a set you fancy and try them out. You don't like them buy a different Tyre next time.Easy

I normally run with Metzeler tourances. This winter i am running Metzeler Karroo3's abit of an agressive tread. Brilliant on light tracks only slipped out once on a spirited ride in. It seams very good in the wet ,no brown moments yet, however done three thousand and the back is down to 8 mm front is still like new, nice tyre tho.
