The Government has finally woken up to what we all know already - that the green paper part of your driving licence is pretty pointless and most of the information is on your photo card licence already.

Let's face it, they are mostly left in people's cupboards, and if they ever get near a motorcycle often end up getting wet and dishevelled. So, after a consulatation called the Red Tape Challenge consultation on road transportation they are officially going to scrap them from 2015. More details of their plan were released today.

About time too ..... where was the sense in having to produce two items, neither of which was (allegedly) valid without the other!

I have a pink paper licence. Just checked my record. All present and correct :). Although group E seems to have been wrapped up into Group A. Group D just says motorcycles.

It won't be long before people with just pink or green paper licences have to send them back for an ID card, oops I means photo licence.

Sent from my iPhone with a smile :)

It is about time the paper part was dropped, I have been caught out a couple of times (ok i don't learn) hiring a car and only had the card part luckily they phoned the DVLA ......

as for the ID implication does not bother me one way or other....

I now as all other truck drivers/bus drivers have to carry /use 3 cards , licence , digi tacho card , drivers CPC qualification card , and also the MPCP (EPIC) card to say i have done a safety course for working in quarries , so have 4 ID cards on me all the time , before long surely they will combineit all wioth the credit card and if you get nicked for speeding etc then the points will automatically go on the money comwe out for the fine

I think it's a good idea but it could mean big delays whilst businesses double check records, e.g. test riding a bike

I just have a green piece of paper in a plastic wallet?

I have both as I have moved back to the old farmhouse I lived in from 1976-90, changed to photo ID card when I lost my wallet. So both are legal....ish.

I have heard of reports where various entitlements have been lost on the plastic card and it has been very useful to have the paper back up to prove to d v l a that they have messed up!

I still have my old red cloth bound licence, it has both bike and car pass records. Its never been thrown away, but after the DVLA started loosing records its become more valuable.

Just done a check as I will need to get a new licence next year, looks correct so I hope the final release enhancements don't mess it all up, GOV & IT have a poor track record. My paper licence is 36 years old, my last house move, and looks it.
Interestingly I was asked for some ID from a building society so I offered a photo ID bus pass which was not accepted but my paper, no photo, driving licence was accepted, security obviously consisted of ticking the correct box not identifying the individual!
