Rear brake fire

A couple of weeks ago I put up a post on 'Old Big Trailie' i.e pre-swap over to this all new singing, dancing and buzzin 'New Big Trailie', that I had had a crap weekend because my back brake caught fire when I was out for a Sunday afternoon pootle on my 1997 F650. Well, just under £200 later I am back on the road and everything is working. The long and the short is that the master cylinder rubber had perished, salt/grit/sh*t got in and rusted the inside of the barrel which in turn squeezed the nylon bush in which the piston operates, and the result was a locked back brake – only apart from loss of power I didn't pay any attention for a while until a funny smell came up between my legs. Now I know I'm getting on in years, but I'm still enough in control of me functions to know if its me or the bike making funny smells, and if I could do burning brakes I'd patent it. I let it cool down and managed to prize the pads apart with the end of a pair of pliers, and rode home without a rear brake.

On taking it all to bits I quickly realised I had to buy a brand new Brembo master cylinder from http://www.intobikes.co.uk but as the rear calliper was badly damaged by the pads going on fire (that never would have happened in the old days with asbestos – mutter, mutter) and new rear callipers are totally non-existent I took it over to Mike at Overland & Classic at Melton Mowbray, about 60 miles away from Stone (overlandandclassic@hotmail.co.uk). Sal and I made a bit of a day out of it and bought a couple of HUGE Melton Mowbray pies, so its well worth while going to see Mike and not just posting the bits to him! He rebuilt the calliper using the repair kit from Motorworks and charged me very little money – he even oven-baked the heat resistant black paint on so its as good as new now. I'll put up a separate post on Dealer Reviews as for anyone in the Midlands with a Trailie he's a very useful guy to know.

PS Thanks to the lass in the Micra and loads of bikers on sports bikes for stopping to see if I was OK
