Bike in a van

Hi

I was pondering transporting a bike in a van.

But I think there are complications with insurance and other things.

Many moons ago, someone turned up with a bike in a van, KTM I think and ramps to get it out.
If that's you, please comment.

Other comments welcome of course.

If you’ve got a van then go for it. If you haven’t it’s a bloody minefield. Vans come in so many shapes, sizes, options, doors, lengths, widths and heights that it becomes almost impossible to narrow down what you need. That’s even before you get to the usual stuff of optional extras, colour and trim in a normal vehicle purchase. Good uns are stupid expensive too. I went through all this and gave up. Oh, and car no claims doesn’t transfer to a car, and you can’t normally drive a car on your van insurance and vice versa.

I went for a trailer in the end. Loads cheaper but not without its drawbacks.

Most bikes will go in a SWB van by removing the screen and mirrors, only one that I have not been able to get in the Transporter is my Tenere 700 due to the dash height.
Getting them in is easy enough even the Tenere 1200 first gear and run it up ally ramp, taking a big bike out I needed a hand due to weight going backwards.
The price of vans ATM is stupid, if you have room at home how about a box trailer with a folding rear door that doubles as a ramp? This could also be insulated and used as a sleeping pod giving you best of both worlds at a fraction of the cost.

Having a van is great for moving your own stuff, others will want their stuff moving too (generally for free or not much more....)
Handy for the odd impromptu bike or other van sized purchases.
Add extra seats, take 'em out & sleep in it, whatever.

I couldn't be without ours.

Not aware of any insurance implications by putting a bike/s in the back but I guess that doesn't mean to say that that there aren't any! Unless it's for transporting someone elses bike & starts the whole hire & reward thing.

I limited choice by holding out for a short wheel base medium roof 'Transit' type van.
Any more than swb will not fit in a normal parking bay, medium roof so bikes fit in without removing bits & so I can just about stand up in it although lower vans look better.
None of that matters anymore as we no longer have a life & the thing is relegated to kiddie carrier....

If it's just for the odd trip, there are alternatives as mentioned above.
