R1200GS Oil Pressure Lamp - Help!

Hi folks,

Oil pressure lamp came on the other day and I don't understand why. It had new oil and filter 1500 mls ago and the levels are perfect. I have no leaks.

Any ideas? Should I do another oil and filter change this week to see if it rectifies the problem?

Cheers, any advice appreciated.

Beg, borrow or worst case, buy a pressure switch and pop it onto you machine. Not un-heard of for the switch to go phutt - did two on F650 funduro's ;)

Cheers Steve, will look into it. Seriously looking at trading in the GS for something else. The expense is doing my head in.

Upgrade it for an 1150GS,

You know it makes sense :)

Really don't know what to consider. I wouldn't mind going back to an AT, I like how basic they are with regards to maintenance and customising. BMW bits and bobs are stupid £££££££!! Not so sure about the AT two-up with kit though.

What about the V-Strom? Any comments?

I actually quite like the Faser 1000 too but that's moving away from the big traillie styling I rather like.

How about a newish Vara? Brilliant 2up touring bikes for not too much pennies

I was going to say a Vara but Pete beat me to it. Reliable & cheap as chips too, don't believe the doom mongers re fuel consumption, my carby uses similar fuel to most other big large capacity bike & better than recent figures quoted by rd04 owners, fi ones are a bit better too.

STens & Vstroms both have a good name and a new 1000 can be had for 7 1/2k which is a serious ammount of bike for the money ;)

Had a quick look at some Varas on eBay and you do seem to get more bang for your buck. Need to get this thing fixed first grrrrr :thumbd:

Richie,

AT two up with luggage is not good.
We have done it, but it's pretty cramped and you have to keep honking it all the time to get anywhere fast.

Saying that, ultra reliable and good road presence.

Dunno, hard call to make, I would go for a vara for cheap two up touring

And a dr for hooning about :D

Got the Vespa for hooning about mate, can't help but smile when i'm zipping around.

I learnt a top tip the other day though; you can't get your knee down going around corners... :eekicon:

Been on the blower to Dick Lovett, BMW Mottorad Bristol. They want £75 to collect the bike and then £82 per hour labour. I mean, WTF??!

Anyone want a 2004 R1200GS, 38K miles, matt black, full vario luggage with the oil pressure lamp on? It needs to go. What do you think I could ask for this?

C'mon Richie. It can't be that hard to find the oil pressure switch, unscrew it, and fit another. The boxer engines are mostly easily accessible. If a known to be ok switch still leaves the light on its either an electrical/electronic problem or a fecked engine. Also try and find someone local with a GS911 to see if there's any other faults.

If you sell with the light on prospective buyers have to assume a worst case so the bike is worth scrap value and not much more. Take all the accessories you can off it to sell for good money and sell the bike for buttons.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

A quick swap with a known-good switch is the best answer, but ........
I suspect any half-tidy garage would connect-up an oil pressure gauge and check that all's well for peanuts...... there's not even a bonnet to open! Assuming the pressure's OK, you can put off replacing the faulty switch until it's convenient.

Yeah sorry folks, all good suggestions, rant over!

I'll take your advice, dig the Haynes manual out and have a look. Mechanical stuff scares me!

And if it does need someone to fix it find a good independent man not the rip off dealers

Of course mate, that would be great, cheers. Have just ordered a new oil pressure switch from Motorworks thinking for the sake of £13 it's worth a punt. I haven't found my Haynes manual yet, think it's in the garage of my (soon to be within 2 weeks) ex-wife so a chat with J would be cool beans.

Richie check the oul level window on the left hand side of the engine check the oil level is up to the upper part of the inspection window. The oil pressure switch is just to the right of the inspection glass check the loom is pluged in to the switch.
You may have just a faulty switch. I fit these switches all the time in work. So they do fail. But check your oil first make sure there is oil in the engine. I will try and get some pics for you. Remember this is a tractor engine simplest one out there.

Cheers J, the level are fine, will swap the switch and let you know how i get on.

Just been getting annoyed a bit with the beast, have had it 18 months, only done about 6K miles and I must have spent 3K on servicing, mot and repair.......BRING BACK THE TWON!
