Where to visit in middle England

My wife and I are planning to do more long weekends on the bike this year. We would like to head south, our passports are up to date, I'm thinking south of Edinburgh and north of Leeds. Where would you recommend?

Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire moors, Lake district to name but 3 Rob.

Nearer to home, Dumfries & Galloway makes for a great destination.

There are plenty on here that live in and around the English areas that might put you right for accomodation, but honestly, anywhere in those areas makes for stunning scenery and riding.

But you're a southern'r, "two half shandies" :

You can't go far wrong in the area south of Edinburgh & North of Leeds, there's quite a large, varied & relatively unspoilt chunky of countryside between those points to explore.

D&G/Scottish Borders/Northumberland is pretty much all great.
There's Hadrian's wall & even bits of the coast North & South of Newcastle are nice.

Further south you have the Pennines which themselves cover quite an area, to the west are Lakes & Trough of Bowland, to the East (of the Pennines) are the North York moors & there's also some quite nice coastline to the East of the NYM national park, the Yorkshire wolds & Howardian Hills are worth dipping a toe into too.

Narrowing it down a little, Hawes, Keswick or Helmsley would make a great base for a trip (in the central bit at least)
