Central Heating

The quote is for a Worcester boiler so I am glad Jim concurs. No solar panels and no other water heating so removing the DHW tank frees up some space in an airing cupboard we might incorporate into a bedroom.

Is a combi also a condensing boiler?

Most if not all combi boilers are of the efficient condensing type - just be sure to protect the condensate pipe from frost.

The condensate pipe will all be indoors :thumbsupanim:

Has anyone got experience of the Hive app for controlling heating? What do you think?

I am getting a significant upgrade to our ancient heating system and they have offered hive for just £50 extra (normally £250). Even at £50 I am not certain it's worth it.
Just coming back to this Austin, we were out with friends last night and they have been using Hive for a couple of years now.
Overall they seemed to like it but it does lock up/freeze occasionally needing a reset, which it did last night as they were trying to demonstrate it.....
Obviously needs reasonable internet/wifi to operate remotely both at home & from the phone.

I can see the benefits of switching off, monitoring the house temp & boosting 1/2 hr before you get in.

I always fancied moving away from gas after my Baxi dies. People say I am mad but all I hear is neighbours stories of bust condenser boilers and leaking systems. I read an interesting post that makes you think....A heating engineer said he had quoted 8 grand to replace a whole system in a large house....he then said if u put a £20 cheap leccy heater in each room and heated them up as and when required...how long would it take before you had spent the equivalent 8 grand?

.

Quick mental maths.....,about 6-8ish years depending on how much more efficient the new boiler is.

Including the running costs of the new system? £800 a year x 8 £6400. It was just a point he was making (even though not in his interest as a heating installer!) that makes you think. The Baxi soldiers on!

A plumber suggesting something that is not in their interest.... Now, theres something I've not heard before. Must have been a nightmare job!

That's it all installed and working - I know we are having a warm spell, but heck its too warm in the house. Thermostats slowly being turned down until we find a nice steady temperature I can sit in comfortably.
