Watch this space for details of a 2 day trip up the spine of England on the first weekend in August. Simple idea: start in Derbyshire then follow the route of the Pennine Way as best we can using small country lanes and where possible green lanes/trails to finish at Kirk Yetholm. Overnight at about half way which I think is Tan Hill Inn.

Provisional official overnights:
Friday - camp site at Wardlow Mires opposite Jellies Cafe and next to the the Three Stags Head. There is YHA hostel about 5 miles away and other camping barns/hostels not far away.

Saturday: Tan Hill Inn. Campsite and Hostel and B&B. Kirkby Stephen is about 10 miles away so we could go to Takoda Camping. There's also a hostel in KS.

Sunday. I will try and book Mounthooley Camping Barn. Camping an option here too. http://college-valley.co.uk/Mounthooly.htm If that doesnt work I will try and find somewhere in Wooler.

Its early days for this trip so keepan eye out for updates. I will be advertising on other forums too.

I'm in for this one Austin. Just need to make sure i'm not working.

Hostel or B+B saves carrying all the camping gear. :thumbsupanim:

There will be an all on road route. I will be needing some help with the planning for the green lane sections from people with local knowledge and who can grade the off road sections as (1) easy and suitable for all, including an overloaded GSA with a pillion; (2) Intermediate, suitable for solo but loaded bikes with panniers; (3) Hard suitable for lightly loaded off road bikes.

I need some volunteers to help.

This sounds like fun. I might be able to get away, and if there is an all road route could be up for it. Hostel / camping barn good for me too. Will depend on family arrangements which I won't know till nearer the time, but definitely interested. At the very least I could pop up to Yondermans to see you all off :sidecar:

I have made provisional bookings at bunk houses as follows:

12 Beds at the Royal Oak Camping Barn, Hurdlow, Derbyshire for Friday 1st August. About 10 miles from Jellies. There's spare space available so if there is more than 12 of us I can book more beds. Cost is £15 per night. Camping is also an option for a few. http://www.peakpub.co.uk/camping/#conditions

12 Beds at the Green Dragon Bunk Barn, Hardraw near Hawes for Saturday 2nd August. Again further bed space available and camping also available. Cost is also £15 per night. http://www.greendragonhardraw.com/accommodation.html

I am trying to get a booking at the Wooler Youth Hostel but they arent answering the phone. http://www.independenthostelguide.co.uk ... =875&s=206 and http://www.woolerhostel.co.uk/ Again I will provisionally book 12 beds. As far as I can tell they dont do camping on site but I am sure we will be able to find somewhere for those that need it. Cost is £15.50 per night. If this hostel doesnt come off there are a couple of others not too far away.

If you are coming on this trip I will need payment for the accommodation up front and as soon as you commit. I will also have to put a cut off date for bookings so I can work with each of the Hostels to plan the trip. I dont what date that will be yet, but lets assume its something like 1st June. If you miss the cut off date you can still come on the trip but you will have to make your own accommodation arrangements.

In terms of the route I have the road route more or less sorted and it is 90% rural roads - good biker A roads (like snake pass), B roads, or very minor Pennine rural roads. We will do the Kielder Forest drive so everyone can do a little bit of off road, and we might go across the Military Ranges around Otterburn if open. If not there is a just as good route to the North along the border.

For the off road route planning I would be grateful for some help identfying suitable trails not too far from the planned road route. I would like people who knows the trails in the following areas Derbyshire & Yorks (south of the dales), Yorks Dales, Cumbria & Durham, Northumberland to help. Trails will need a sensible classification as to suitability and I may need you to lead the ride along any trails.

Looking at the first nights site it seems to camp you have to pay for a minimum of two nights. Cant quite work out their pricing structure. Looks like its 17 quid to camp per night. Am I reading that right?

The website does say minimum two nights but they agreed if there was just a few campers who were part of the bunkhouse group then they could camp one night.

Bunkhouse is £15. Camping is £8 for a small tent.

I will start a list of who's in and what accommodation is required shortly. I suspect campers won't need to pay up front. I have booked the bunkhouses in the expectation that is what most people wanted.
