Hi Austin,

Been keeping an eye on this, quite fancied it, but it clashes with this

http://www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk/

Go every year, a real hoot and extremely good craic -- ( you'd like it Austin , they have a whisky cocktail shed !!!! ) and that's what it is-- a corrugated iron lean-to, spent many a happy hour in there :thumbsupanim:

Looks like a cracking weekend in a beautiful area and as always it will be run in the usual meticulous Winkler manner.
Have a good time guys

Hi John, all is not lost. The link to the tartan event shows that it is on the weekend after my pennine run.

It does look like a good do though and understand if you can't make both but it would be good to see you again.

Cheers

I had a little recce this week along the southern part of the route from Derbyshire through to the southern parts of the Yorkshire dales. This is most difficult part to get a route through as all roads go west/ east and nothing really going north / south and quite a lot of urban area to get through.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by both the moors and the northern towns, most of which I have never been to. Holmfirth is a really nice town so we will stop there to look at Sids Cafe from last of the summer wine and the Summer wine expo. Next up for the goulish amongst you will be Saddleworth moor. Then it's more nice northern towns with Uppermills, Denshaw, Delph, and Ripponden all pleasant if busy little busy places separated by huge tracts of northern moorland. Hebden bridge is apparently the lesbian capital of the UK and then there was Haworth with all the Bronte associations. I was planning a stop here to absorb the culture.

Once clear of Colne and Hudders' home town of Barnoldswick the route hits the the Yorks dales properly with a dramatic change of scenery as the geology changes to limestone with a stop planned at Mallham for a walk to the Cove or Gordale scar. Then it's small moorland roads or fast B roads to Hawes and the overnight stop.

It's going to be brill.

I will write some more on the northern end later.

Sounds ace. Had a nice family visit to Malham Cove in 2006. Always remember pushing our first born about two miles in her push chair to get to it. That was my exercise for the day!

Been to Holmfirth years ago. Even had a bite to eat in "Sid's Cafe" - a chip butty I think.

Know Hebden Bridge a bit as had some family live in Heptonstall a while back, which is up the hill out of Hebden. I remember the road out of Hebden to Keighley being rather steep - or maybe I'm mis-remembering. Oh, and in Keighley there's the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. On a previous visit, adn trip on said railway, we happened to find a fine cafe in Haworth that did a very, very good egg and chips.

The last time I was at High Force Falls must be over 20 years ago - in the middle of winter, in the snow. No wonder there was no one else there. Even got some photos somewhere (real photgraphs, not these digital things) - but the light was very poor, so they didn't come out to well. Just checked and I'm rather disappointed to find that not only do they charge £1.50 per adult to view the falls but there's a parking charge of £1.50 per bike as well! Not going there then!

As for the rest of the route - I'll have to think if I've been anywhere else.
