I had a little recce this week along the southern part of the route from Derbyshire through to the southern parts of the Yorkshire dales. This is most difficult part to get a route through as all roads go west/ east and nothing really going north / south and quite a lot of urban area to get through.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by both the moors and the northern towns, most of which I have never been to. Holmfirth is a really nice town so we will stop there to look at Sids Cafe from last of the summer wine and the Summer wine expo. Next up for the goulish amongst you will be Saddleworth moor. Then it's more nice northern towns with Uppermills, Denshaw, Delph, and Ripponden all pleasant if busy little busy places separated by huge tracts of northern moorland. Hebden bridge is apparently the lesbian capital of the UK and then there was Haworth with all the Bronte associations. I was planning a stop here to absorb the culture.
Once clear of Colne and Hudders' home town of Barnoldswick the route hits the the Yorks dales properly with a dramatic change of scenery as the geology changes to limestone with a stop planned at Mallham for a walk to the Cove or Gordale scar. Then it's small moorland roads or fast B roads to Hawes and the overnight stop.
It's going to be brill.
I will write some more on the northern end later.
