Norway is it worth it :-)

I might be up for this, I can only manage a couple of weeks really so time constraints might come into play.

Fiona and me are just in the middle of planning something for next summer so 2016 would be plenty of time to organize everything.
I'll keep an eye out for updates on here.

Yes there will be snow left in the terrain on higher ground way into july.
The roads however will be open early june.
It also depends how far north in Norway you go.

Here are some useful links.

Weather on higher roads in the south of Norway:

Weather on higher roads in the north of Norway:
http://www.yr.no/sted/Fjelloverganger_i_Nord-Norge/

Norway road department (Norsk Vegvesen) informs on roads closed or otherwise difficult to use:
http://www.vegvesen.no/Trafikkinformasj ... pe=utvalgt

Snow chains should not be required, but a heated west, and hot grips is handy to have.

It's also a god advice to have a reserve plan in hand if the road you were planning to take is closed due to snow or ice.

This summer I visited Hardangervidda http://goo.gl/maps/nz2o2 in late june, and the road was not officially open.
We were lucky that there were a car from the Norwegian "Vegvesen" there at the gate that opened it for us.
The gravelroad was in bad shape from the previous winter that we had to drive on our own risk.
Not the best of choises using a heavy Harley, but I made it there and back.

Norway should be a good choise in that there are roads for everyone and every type of bike.
Those with adventures in their harts and with proper tools to get them there can drive the small gravelroads over the high passes, and those that cherish their lives and rides more street oriented bikes can drive the bigger lower roads, and with some planning they can all meet up at the evening sharing their daily experience.

I hope I do not put You off by telling You that your snow chains is not essential?
There are roads that can take you all the way to glaciers, and you can take a dip right into to the green icy coold waters of a melting glacier as the bike is parked in three meters of snow.
(No need of a side- or main stand).

If you zoom in on the picture, you can see that it is a ski and it is mounted so that is is under the cylinder - and there'll be one the other side as well. It looks like the mounting is to the frame under the cylinder and there appears to be a strap (tied to the crash bars) to prevent the ski from dropping to far.

Or at least that's what it looks like to me.

This sort of idea then I guess. Now don't get excited MCVader, doesn't work when your calipers are seized! :p You fixed them yet?
Don't get excited about it as I am all sorted now fro winter riding. Still would love to have a go just to see what it's like with the spikes and ski.
You definitely don't need front brakes when you on snow or ice :D

In this picture of the GS, I can see studded tyres for the snow, anyone know what that thing by the front wheel is? Is there one on both sides in case of falling, does it go under the front wheel somehow and turn it into a narrow snowmobile??

It's skies and I think they were home made and uses the same design as the Swedish Army bikes, albeit a bit beefier.
One ski on each side.

I think there is a web page somewere on the Net from this (Swedish) guy that owns the bike.

Is this trip a POSSIBLE go'er then for 2016? I for one would be interested, my wife would be interested to and I have a couple of friends who probably would be as well, possibly another two if it can be done by road bikes.

My wife has camped in Strynn in the summer before, said it was warm in the valley, cold up on the glacier. Just as well really as she was snoboarding there. Lots of Midges to, guess they followed her being Scottish.
